Welcome to the Pediatric Page!
Pediatric pelvic floor issues are more common than most families realize. From bedwetting to constipation and bowel dysfunction, many children experience challenges related to how their pelvic floor muscles are working.
The good news is that pediatric pelvic health therapy can help! As kids learn how their bodies work they often start to feel more confident in their day-to-day lives. Things like school, sports, playdates, and sleepovers can feel a lot easier when their body isn’t working against them.
A lot of parents come in feeling like they somehow missed something during potty training or could have handled things differently. We understand that is a really normal place for your mind to go. But these issues are almost never about parenting. More often, they’re related to muscle coordination, learned habits, or how a child’s nervous system is developing. Typically by age 5 your child’s nervous system is 90% formed and they may be ready for pediatric pelvic floor therapy. Along with the support of a pediatrician, we take a team based approach to treating your child.
Coming in for support simply means you’re paying attention and advocating for your child and that matters!
We’re also very intentional about how we work with kids. Everything we do is age-appropriate, low-pressure, and designed to help them feel safe and understood. There’s no shame, no embarrassment. Just simple, practical tools to help their body work the way it’s supposed to.
Pelvic floor therapy is typically most effective once a child has enough awareness to participate in simple exercises and daily routines, often around age 5 and older. That said, if your child is under the age of 5, please contact us! Dr. Courtney will be able to assist you in deciding whether your child is appropriate for care.
Common Questions from Parents
Is this something my child will just grow out of?
Sometimes, but not always. While some kids improve with time, others continue to struggle longer than expected. Early support can help prevent patterns from becoming more ingrained and make things easier sooner.
Will my child feel embarrassed?
This is something we’re very mindful of. We create a calm, supportive environment and meet your child where they are. Most kids actually feel relieved to understand what’s going on with their body.
Did I do something wrong during potty training?
No. These issues are very rarely caused by anything a parent did or didn’t do. Kids’ bodies develop at different rates, and sometimes they just need a little extra support.
When should we consider pelvic floor therapy?
If your child is dealing with things like frequent accidents, constipation, or difficulty with bowel or bladder control, it’s worth having a conversation.
What does a visit look like?
Visits are very kid-friendly and tailored to your child’s age and comfort level. We focus on education, movement, breathing, and simple habit changes, often using games or visuals to make it approachable. There is typically no internal treatment for pediatric patients.
