Frequently Asked Questions

You deserve to feel informed, supported, and confident when it comes to your pelvic health. We've gathered some of the questions we hear most often to help you better understand pelvic floor physical therapy, what to expect, and how we can help support your goals. If you still have questions after reading, don't hesitate to reach out, we're here to listen and help.

What's does my first visit look like?

Your first visit is designed to help us understand your story, assess how your body is functioning, and create a personalized plan for your care. We’ll discuss your symptoms, health history, goals, and any factors that may be affecting your pelvic health, followed by a physical assessment that may include movement testing, evaluation of your hips, spine, and pelvic floor muscles. At the end of your evaluation, your therapist will explain their findings and work with you to develop a treatment plan that fits your goals, lifestyle, comfort level, and budget.

Can I come to my appointment on my period?

Yes you can! Typically we avoid internal work with a heavier flow. However most treatment plans include both internal and external work so it's up to you and what you feel would align with your goals and comfort level. If you're unsure feel free to reach out to us and your therapist can help you determine what's right for you.

Do I need to do an internal exam?

An internal exam is NEVER required. If you are uncomfortable with an internal exam for any reason at all, this portion of the exam can be replaced with an external pelvic floor exam, fully clothed.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, such as athletic wear, leggings, sweatpants, shorts, or a loose-fitting top. If your therapist plans to assess your hips, back, abdomen, or pelvic area, clothing that's easy to adjust can be helpful.

Do we treat kids?

Yes we do! We treat children ages 5 and up. To learn more about what that might look like browse our Pediatrics page here.

Do we treat men?

Yes we do. We understand that the pelvic floor is not just a female issue and it affects males as well. If you're experiencing urinary incontinence, groin/hip pain that won't go away, bowel issues, or sexual dysfunction we're able to help you.

When should I start physical therapy while pregnant?

Truthfully there's no right answer, it all depends on your body, symptoms, and goals. It's never too late or too early to start pelvic floor physical therapy while pregnant. If you're curious about what that might look like for you check out our blog post on the subject here.

Can I bring my kids to my appointment?

Yes, absolutely! You're welcome to bring your kids to your appointment. We do want to make sure you're able to fully focus on yourself and get the most out of your visit, so if having your children with you might make that difficult, we recommend arranging childcare and coming on your own if possible. Our goal is to help you have the best experience and care during your appointment.

I just had gender affirming surgery, can I come here?

Absolutely. We provide specialized care for patients recovering from gender-affirming surgeries, and our therapists are trained to support you throughout your healing journey. Our goal is to ensure you feel heard, respected, and empowered every step of the way.

When should I start physical therapy after giving birth?

We usually recommend starting pelvic floor physical therapy 6 weeks after giving birth, no matter if you had a vaginal or cesarean delivery. However it is never too late to start!
